A DVI cable is one of the best cables you will need if you want to experience 1080p content at 144Hz. DVI ( Digital Visual Interface) is the most widely used connector replacing VGA due to the advancement of technology from analog to digital. The best DVI cable for 144hz can transmit both analog and digital data.

DVI can be configured in different modes to transmit analog or digital signals or both analog and digital. The DVI-D is for digital signals, DVI- A for analog signals and DVI-I for both digital and analog signals. It is however only the Dual-link DVI that has the capacity for 1080p content at 144Hz.

Different Types of DVI Cables

It is important to know which DVI cable to use (DVI-D, DVI- A or DVI-I) for your device. You should use the right cable to get optimum video and audio quality. The right DVI cable is the one that is compatible with your device.

DVI-A Cable

This DVI cable is used to transmit the signal to an analog display (e.g. CRT monitor). This cable is commonly used to connect to a VGA device because DVI-A and VGA cables have the same signals. A DVI-A cable is also used to connect a DVI-A source to a DVI-I monitor.

DVI-D Cable

This DVI cable is used to transmit digital signals from the video source (video cards) to an LCD monitor. It allows a faster and provides higher quality images between the source and display than analog. It provides better connections, too.

DVI-I Cable

This DVI combines the best of both worlds. It can transmit signals from an analog source to an analog display as well as from a digital source to a digital display.

It is important to note that it is not possible to interchange analog and digital formats. A DVI-A cable will not work on a digital system and a DVI-D cable cannot be used on an analog system. You will need a DVI-D to VGA converter to connect a digital source to an analog display and a VGA to DVI-D converter to make an analog source work with a digital display.

Single Link and Dual-Link DVI

DVI-D and DVI-I cables come in single or dual links format connectors.

Single Link

  • Uses 12 of its 24 pins
  • Supports up to 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz resolution

Dual Link

  • Uses all 24 pins
  • Supports up to 2048 x 1536 @ 60 Hz resolution
  • Each link comes with 3 data channels with 165 MHz maximum bandwidth

Most DVI digital cables come with connectors that support dual-link cables. There are however some plasma TVs that support only single link cables. Always make it a point to check for the right DVI cable to use.

Cable Lengths

A standard copper wired DVI digital cable is approximately 5 meters long. Fiber optic DVI cables can be up to 100 meters long.

While DVI-I cable can handle both analog and digital signals, it is useless to use one because only the analog or the digital component of the DVI-I cable will be used.

Displaying HD content with fast refresh rates and high bandwidth require the best DVI cable for 144hz and the most preferred choice is a Dual-link DVI cable. Any of the dual-link DVI cable mentioned above will perfectly carry 1080p @144 Hz. The choice depends on which brand you are most comfortable with.
