Have you just bought a new HDMI TV? But your happiness and excitement evaporated as soon as you tried to connect it with your good old DVD player or game console? No worries, you don’t have to throw out your old but really loved devices.  In this article, you will learn how to deal with situations like this.

To gain a better understanding of what a component to HDMI converter is and which one is actually something you need, we will discuss the following topics:

  • Why do we need converters?
  • Why can’t we do simply using adapters?
  • Reviews of the best component to HDMI converters.

Let us get to them one by one.

Why do we need converters?

The technological boom of the last decade has given an impulse to the wide distribution of digital multimedia devices. The integration of such innovative digital devices with more archaic analog ones and using them together required new urgent solutions.

At the moment, connecting a computer with a component video output to a certain display device (monitor, TV, projector) with an HDMI input is possible exclusively using an active signal converter. The same principle is relevant when connecting modern digital video sources (Blue-Ray player, DVD player, satellite receiver) with HDMI video output to display devices of the older generations with component video signal input. So, the question ‘How do we connect all these?’ has the right to exist.

Some people believe in the existence of some special cables which allow connecting devices of older and younger generations, while others spread theories about the possibility of converting different types of signals using special adapters only. Of course, such “connection” and “conversion” are absolutely inoperative. And beliefs of this kind are merely myths.

Why can’t we do simply using adapters?

Here are the main two reasons why conversion of the component signal to HDMI can’t be carried out through the use of any special cables and adapters but requires a certain converter designed exactly for this purpose.

Reason 1: Different types of signals – component signal is of the analog type and the HDMI signal is digital.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a fully digital interface designed for transmitting uncompressed video streams and multi-channel audio signals. HDMI is backward compatible with DVI and supports all computer resolutions up to UXGA, SDTV and HDTV up to 1080p and UltraHD 4K, as well as 8-channel digital audio – all over the same cable. The HDMI interface is the most common in today’s consumer market, providing a simple and high-performance solution for connecting various multimedia devices like game consoles, DVD players, AV consoles and receivers, to compatible digital HDTV displays.

The HDMI standard provides a high degree of protection against unauthorized copying that meets the requirements of most high-quality multimedia content providers. Modern devices with HDMI support HDCP (High Bandwidth Content Protection) technology meant to protect data from unauthorized copying. In fact, the essence of protection technology comes down to the fact that each device included in the signal path with HDCP encryption must be compatible with HDCP to let the signal go from the source to display.

Reason 2: HDCP presence in the HDMI signal

This is another reason why we can’t go with cables or adapters only but need a special device when we need to connect our older devices with new ones. If we need to convert an HDMI signal from a Blue-Ray player or satellite receiver to a component video signal, it may happen that even using a suitable converter doesn’t help.  This is due to the above-mentioned HDCP technology: an encrypted signal is from the HDMI output of the video source after conversion goes to the component input of the display device. Since component video signal does not support HDCP protection all you see is just “black screen”. Only special devices can solve this problem. Converting a component signal to HDMI doesn’t cause any problems like this.

  1. I have an old style DVD recorder/player. It has ONLY component inputs/outputs, no HDMI or S video.
The comcast cable box has HDMI output. Please advise if recording can be done with 2 HDMI adaptors: cable box HDMI to converter to component out to recorder
And back so I can see what I am recording. The old style cable box worked well. Thank you.
